Franklin, Massachusetts - Facts & Figures
Franklin, Massachusetts was named after Benjamin Franklin, with hopes that he would donate a bell for a church steeple in town. Instead, he donated 116 volumes of his books, which the town decided would be lent to the residents for free. The library, named Franklin Public Library, has been in operation ever since. Franklin is also home to probably the oldest continuously operational one-room school house. There are 74 historical buildings in the city. The city is also the birthplace of the "Father of Public Education," Horace Mann. Franklin is not located in Franklin County.
