Lowell, known as the cradle of the industrial revolution in the United States, is the fourth largest city in Massachusetts. Many of the city's historic sites have been preserved by the National Park Service. Lowell maintains many of the amenities of a larger city, but offers a small-town feeling. In 2008, Lowell ranked as the 7th most violent city in the state due to high drug trafficking and gang activity. Lowell is a city of culture and home to Lowell General Hospital, Pollard Memorial Library, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell Museum, and other public galleries. The city has also been the subject of many novels.
