As a richly diverse community, Canoga Park/West Hills has become a very special community to work and live in. Canoga Park/West Hills is a young community, with 60% of its population under the age of 35 and 77% under the age of 45.
The division of North American Aviation, Rocketdyne, moved into the area in 1955 and became a major employer along with the Atomics International and Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) divisions. Then, to service the aerospace industry, other aerospace companies followed, which led to small machine shops and other ancillary businesses. The Santa Susana Field Lab property is closed for extended environmental cleanup and is now used as an open-space park.
