Hayward, California has had human inhabitants for more than 1,000 years. Much of this history, particularly any architecture, was destroyed in a massive earthquake in 1868. Hayward is located along the Hayward Fault Zone, and earthquakes are always a risk to structures in the area. The city was historically known for agriculture and tourism, as well as becoming a cowboy destination in the 1930s. Many old western movies were filmed in and around Hayward.
