Kaunakakai, Hawaii - Facts & Figures
Kaunakakai is a charming paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town that lacks traffic lights, dating back to the early 1900s. Kaunakakai is also the island’s main harbor, where locals still fish for their dinner. The Kaunakakai Harbor is where you will find the state's longest pier, extending well past the reef. The town became famous by the 1930s by the song "The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai", beginning an ongoing tradition of designating an honorary mayor for the town.
