Flint, Michigan is located along the Flint River about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. Flint gained popularity with the birth of General Motors and the Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37, which inaugurated the era of labor unions. The city suffered financial emergencies from the de-industrialization of General Motors, along with other contributors, putting the city $30 million in debt. In December 2011, Flint placed first on the "Most Violent Cities in America" list. Forbes Magazine ranked Flint Number 6 on the list of "America's most violent cities for women" in April 2012. Flint is home to a large cultural center funded by the auto industry revenue from the 1950s. It is also headquarters to Citizens Republic Bancorp and the University of Michigan's Flint campus.
