Matawan, New Jersey - Facts & Figures
The original inhabitants of Matawan, New Jersey called the area "Mechananienk," meaning, "where two rivers come together." This led the Dutch people who later settled there to derive the name Matawan. It was settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, but became a borough in 1895.
More recently, Matawan celebrated its tercentennial in the 1980's and was ranked #12 in "The 50 Best Places to Raise Your Kids" by Business Week in 2007. It is a participant in the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, whose goal is to bring life to the economy in the area by marketing traditional downtown areas, housing opportunities, American history and the scenic coastline beauty of the region.
