Suffolk, New York - Facts & Figures
Suffolk County, New York makes up the central and eastern part of Long Island, the most eastern portion of the state and New York metropolitan area. This suburban area was named after the part of England from which its first settlers immigrated. The county is only 86 miles by 26 miles, but much of that is water. Visitors will find more lighthouses here than in any other county in the nation, there are 15 of 26 originally still standing. According to the Suffolk County, they are the top county for agriculture in New York, stating that, "The weather is temperate, clean water is abundant, and the soil is so good that Suffolk is the leading agricultural county in New York State. That Suffolk is still number one in farming, even with the development that has taken place, is a tribute to thoughtful planning, along with the excellent soil, favorable weather conditions, and the work of dedicated farmers in this region." Forbes magazine named Suffolk number 4 for richest counties in the U.S. The median income per household is $103,900, and only 4% of the population under the poverty line.
