Lima, Ohio's claim to fame in its state is that it is an important retail center, number one in the state for sales and purchases. It also possesses the most buying power per household in Ohio. Lima has also been ranked in the top ten nationally for affordable housing.
Housing has been important throughout Lima's history, with major industries locating there and bringing an abundance of jobs to the area. Ford has an enormous facility in Lima, employing over 1,600 workers. Initially, the town was a blue collar and smokestack town, centered on railroad and hubs, as well as oil drilling. With its discovery of oil in 1885, Lima began what was know as the "Oil Boom of Northwest Ohio." The town has been home to Lima Locomotive works, as well as the medical center of the region. Today, its two hospitals still serve much of the region and are expanding, the additions known as "The Medical Center of the Future."
