Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - Facts & Figures
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is located in the center of fertile Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and is the capital of the state. It is home to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest indoor agricultural show in the country, as well as a large outdoor sports show and a classic car expo. Recently, Harrisburg has struggled economically. In 1981 it was declared one of the most distressed cities in the United States These fluctuations are due to its reliance on manufacturing and production. Good years in steel, agriculture and food service, added to the stability of employment in its state and government jobs, can turn around the city's whole economy. Harrisburg is further diversifying by supporting the growth of a technological and biotech industry in its area. Despite those few years of struggle, it was ranked as the number seven "recession-proof" metropolitan area, and Forbes chose it as the 2nd best place in the nation to raise a family.
