Reading, Pennsylvania lent its name to the Reading Railroad, which brought coal to all the cities along the Schuylkill River. This railroad is the same as the one that can be bought in the Monopoly board game. "The Pagoda," the most recognizable landmark in Reading, overlooks the city from the top of Mount Penn. It was built in 1908 and is now a hotel and restaurant. Reading is home to the first Amish community that was established in the country. The William Penn Memorial Fire Tower offers a 60-mile panoramic view of the area surrounding Reading.
There are five higher education institutions in Reading: Albright College, Alvernia University, Pace Institute, Penn State Berks and Reading Area Community College.
