Aiken, SC is located in the Central Savannah River Area and was given an All-American City Award in 1997. Aiken is home to two major higher education institutions: the University of South Carolina at Aiken and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (a research unit of The University of Georgia), which is supported by federal, state, corporate, and foundational funding.
Aiken is home to many polo fields and races, including the Aiken Steeplechase Association, which hosts both the Imperial Cup and the Holiday Cup. Over 30,000 people attend each event. Aiken is also home to the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum.
